The Houthi Threat to Freedom of Navigation

Yemeni Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Dr. Shaye Al-Zindani called on the international community today, Tuesday, to support his country's government economically and enhance its security capabilities to play its role in securing freedom of maritime navigation.

This came during his participation in a session related to Red Sea security and securing strategic checkpoints, within the activities of the tenth session of the Rome Mediterranean Dialogues Forum held in the Italian capital, Rome, according to the Yemeni News Agency "Saba".

Al-Zindani stressed the importance of enhancing regional and international cooperation and supporting the Yemeni government to ensure navigation in the Red Sea, and the necessity of taking collective measures and procedures to confront the Houthi threat, including preventing arms smuggling and activating the inspection mechanism established by the Security Council.

He pointed out that the Houthi militias, supported by Iran, are no longer only a threat to Yemen and its stability, but also represent a danger to international peace and security, freedom of maritime navigation and international trade.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs called on the international community to support the Yemeni government economically, developmentally and its security capabilities in the field of coast guard to enable it to play its role in securing freedom of maritime navigation.

At the end of his speech, Minister Al-Zindani stressed that securing the Red Sea and protecting its navigational lanes is a shared responsibility, and that supporting Yemen in confronting security and development challenges is in everyone’s interest, noting that supporting Yemeni legitimacy today represents an investment in the stability of the region and the world.
