Amazon Invests $4 Billion in Chile to Build Data Center Infrastructure

Technology company Amazon announced on Wednesday that it will invest more than $4 billion to build an AWS data center infrastructure region in Chile by the end of 2026.

This investment will be allocated to the establishment of three availability zones, or clusters of isolated data centers, in the new AWS region. Amazon also announced that it plans to hire and develop local talent to operate and support its Chilean region, according to a report published by TechCrunch.

Prasad Kalyanaraman, vice president of infrastructure services at Amazon Web Services, said in a statement: “The AWS South America (Chile) Region will help meet the growing demand for cloud services in Latin America and Chile through secure, reliable, and efficient cloud infrastructure.”

He added, "With the new AWS Region, organizations will be able to build their businesses using advanced AWS technologies, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, to help accelerate growth, productivity, and innovation."

AWS already has several customers in Chile, including LATAM Airlines, Agrosuper, and the Andrés Bello National University. This isn't the first time Amazon has invested in AWS infrastructure and services in Chile. In 2021, Amazon launched AWS Outposts in Chile, helping expand local access to AWS in the country.

In 2023, the company gave customers the ability to leverage private connectivity between AWS and their data centers or offices. That same year, Amazon launched AWS Local Zones to help customers connect to AWS offerings with ultra-low latency.

Many of Amazon's cloud competitors have a presence in Chile. Google Cloud launched its first cloud region in Chile in 2021, after unveiling its plans five years ago. Microsoft Azure announced its first data center region in Chile in 2020.
