ٌRenewed violence at Istanbul Bogazici university

Protests are continuing at the Bogazici university against current rector Naci İnci, who was appointed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan despite a 95 percent disapproval rating he received in polls held among the university community to determine possible rector candidates.

Turkish police have detained 45 students for attempting to set up what they call a “resistance tent” in front of the rector’s office on the south campus. The tent where the students have been holding a vigil in protest against the appointed rectors has been removed upon the instruction of the Rectorate

Several students, protesting the removal of the tent, staged a sit-in protest in front of the Rectorate. Several riot police officers and detention vehicles have entered the South Campus

Videos released by the “Bogazici Resistance” student group on Twitter showed dozens of police in riot gear moving in on students trying to enter the campus

Over the past nine months, the students of Bogazici University have been holding a vigil in the tent as part of their protests against first the appointment of Melih Bulu as the rector of the university by a Presidential decision, then the appointment of Naci İnci for the same position

A prolonged series of protests broke out at the university after Erdogan appointed Inci. Academics argued that the move was a part of Erdogan’s broader effort to centralize control over universities and called on the rector to resign
