Artificial intelligence and the dark web: Shocking details from the trial of the boy who killed his classmate in Egypt

In one of the most horrific crimes to shake Egyptian society, the first session of the trial of the boy Youssef, who killed his classmate, revealed several shocking surprises on Tuesday. The defendant confessed to the court the details of his gruesome crime, confirming that it was premeditated.

The defendant, Youssef, 14, spoke with unusual composure for a child during his interrogation. He confessed in detail to killing his classmate, Mohamed, 13, using a heavy tool, a hammer, to strike him on the head. He then stabbed him multiple times with a knife before cutting the body into six parts. He kept some of the pieces in the refrigerator and cooked and ate a piece of the victim's body in gruesome detail.

Youssef confirmed his premeditated intent to commit the crime, having prepared himself and gathered the necessary tools well in advance. He showed no visible emotion or reaction to the proceedings or the gravity of the situation, according to the victim's lawyer and several attendees.

Artificial Intelligence and the Dark Web

Meanwhile, Mohamed El-Gablawy, the victim's lawyer, revealed surprising new details in the case. He stated that the accused had been preparing for the crime for several months and had even used the popular AI application ChatGpt to ask it how to conceal the crime from the police.

In statements to a television program, the lawyer also asserted a link between the crime and the dark web. He emphasized that forensic evidence revealed messages and conversations between the accused and a foreign national outside the country on the day of the crime, including photos and text messages detailing the circumstances of the incident.

The lawyer stated that technical evidence proved the foreign national was fully aware of the crime, confirming a strong connection to the dark web. He indicated that this foreign national may have been an instigator or accomplice.

In this regard, Al-Jablawi said he would request the court and the technical team to examine the conversations before and after these suspicious exchanges, which might reveal further surprises about the case.

"Boasting about the crime"

Regarding a shocking new detail, the lawyer said the accused kept a picture of the victim's bloodied glasses. When asked why he took the picture, he replied, "To boast about the crime."

The victim's lawyer revealed that the accused's father is currently detained in connection with the case and will soon face criminal trial for his alleged cover-up and knowledge of the crime.

He added that the father wiped away bloodstains and washed the carpets to conceal his son's crime. He also gave his son money the day after the crime to buy plastic bags to hide the body.

After wrapping the victim's remains and carrying them out of the house to dispose of them, the accused felt the weight and went up to his apartment to re-dismember the body in his father's presence.

Medical Examination to Determine His True Age

Furthermore, the court ordered a medical examination of the accused to determine his true age, at the request of the victim's defense.  He is only four months away from legally appearing before a criminal court and facing a prison sentence, as criminal court requires the accused to be over 15 years old.

Al-Jablawi asserted that the prosecution stated during the investigation that the accused was tall and broad-shouldered, which is inconsistent with his stated age on his birth certificate. The lawyer added that the accused is only 14 years and 8 months old, which would necessitate his trial in juvenile court.

Security forces in the Egyptian city of Ismailia found the mutilated body of a child next to a popular mall last October. Investigations later revealed that the perpetrator was a 14-year-old boy who lured his classmate to his home and committed the crime that shocked the Egyptian public.
