Protecting Children: Smart SIM Cards to Shield Them from Internet Dangers

Egypt is preparing to launch SIM cards specifically designed for children, equipped with built-in protection systems that block dangerous content before it reaches them. Egyptian specialists revealed details of the initiative.

Dr. Mohamed Mohsen Ramadan, Head of the Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity Unit at the Arab Center for Research and Studies, stated, "Child-specific SIM cards give parents complete digital control. The future of cybersecurity begins now, and future generations will enter the internet with a real cyber shield."

Dr. Ramadan explained that Egypt is moving towards launching a new generation of SIM cards designed specifically for children, equipped with an integrated protection system that operates at the network level. This initiative represents a significant technological shift in the concept of digital safety, as protection moves from the user level to the level of the communication infrastructure.

How Does the Technology Work?

Dr. Mohsen Ramadan pointed out that the new SIM cards rely on centralized filtering systems within the service provider's network to analyze data traffic in real time and automatically block access to inappropriate content. This includes websites rated +18, violent or shocking content, dangerous or suspicious platforms, and fraudulent or harmful links.

For his part, Major General Abu Bakr Abdel Karim, former Assistant Minister of Interior for Public Relations and Media, stated, "This is a positive step, as these lines do not require external parental control applications or complex setup. The SIM card itself will be the protection tool, making it easier for families to control their children's internet usage without complicated technical procedures." This comes as part of the Egyptian state's efforts to provide a safe digital space for children.

Preventive Security

Major General Abu Bakr Abdel Karim continued, "There are advanced control tools for parents, most notably a digital dashboard that allows monitoring usage activity, setting browsing or online gaming hours, customizing lists of allowed or blocked websites, and generating periodic usage reports to measure the child's digital behavior."

This is a more effective model than traditional monitoring programs. It also reinforces the concept of a "safe digital identity" for children and reduces their vulnerability to cyber extortion or digital grooming.

Furthermore, Major General Abu Bakr Abdul Karim pointed out that protection is only effective when using the same SIM card data. When connecting to external Wi-Fi networks, the filters may not work as effectively because the connection source becomes a different network that does not implement the same security policies.

The initiative aims to build a safer digital environment for future generations and achieve a smart balance between freedom of use and preventive protection, especially as the internet becomes an essential element in education, entertainment, and social interaction.
