Botafogo Surprises Everyone, Defeats Paris Saint-Germain
Brazilian club Botafogo has taken sole possession of Group B of the Club World Cup, taking a giant step toward qualifying for the knockout stages of the global competition currently being held in the United States.
Botafogo pulled off a major upset with a 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain on Thursday evening local time (Friday morning GMT) in the second round of the group, which also saw Atletico Madrid's valuable 3-1 victory over the Seattle Sounders earlier.
Botafogo owes much of this victory to Igor Jesus, who scored the only goal of the match in the 36th minute, while Paris Saint-Germain failed to equalize during the remaining time of the match.
Botafogo, who achieved their second win in the group, moved to six points, leading the group with a perfect record. Paris Saint-Germain remained at three points in second place, tied on points with third-place Atlético Madrid, who finished level on points. Seattle Sounders remained at the bottom of the standings with no points.
Paris Saint-Germain, who opened their campaign in style with a 4-0 win over Atlético Madrid in the first round, will face Seattle Sounders in the third (final) round. This will be a heated encounter between Argentine coach Diego Simeone's team and Botafogo, who began their group campaign with a 2-1 win over Seattle Sounders.
