BBC fires Gary Lineker after anti-Semitic post

The BBC announced on Monday that England star Gary Lineker will leave his position as a presenter at the corporation after the end of the current football season's Match of the Day program. Lineker is likely to miss the BBC's coverage of the 2026 World Cup.

Lineker's departure comes despite his apology for sharing a post from a pro-Palestinian group, which he later deleted from his official Instagram account. The post was accompanied by an image of a rat, prompting accusations of anti-Semitism.

In a statement, Lineker said he immediately deleted the post and apologized. He explained: "I recognize the error and distress I caused, and I reiterate my apologies. Retracting now seems the responsible thing to do.

I have stood up for minorities, humanitarian causes, and all forms of racism throughout my life, including, of course, anti-Semitism, which I abhor. It has no place and should never have a place." Lineker participated in the BBC's coverage of Crystal Palace's FA Cup Final victory over Manchester City.
