Google Adds Gemini AI to Chrome After Avoiding Sale

Google began adding Gemini AI to its Chrome browser for US users on Thursday, just weeks after the company avoided a forced spin-off of the browser from its business in an antitrust case.

A Washington judge ruled earlier this month that Alphabet Inc.-owned Google would not have to sell the browser, handing big tech companies a rare victory in their battle with US antitrust authorities. However, he ordered them to share data with rivals to open up competition in online search.

Google said in a blog post on Thursday that the addition of Gemini AI models to Chrome will be available to Mac and Windows desktop users in the United States, provided their device language is set to English, according to Reuters. Soon, Apple's Chrome app for iOS will also include Gemini built-in. Gemini will be available in Chrome for businesses in the coming weeks via Google Workspace and on mobile devices in the US.

Google has also enhanced Gemini's integration into Chrome with other Google apps, such as Calendar, YouTube, and Maps. Google will add multi-step proxy capabilities to Gemini in Chrome in the coming months. Gemini will be able to find previously visited web pages and summarize content from multiple sites, among other upgrades.

This integration also represents a push to compete with other companies offering proxy browsers, such as Perplexity, which made an unsolicited $34.5 billion cash offer to acquire Chrome in August. Perplexity's AI-powered browser, codenamed Comet, can perform certain tasks on behalf of the user.
