Hungarian international midfielder Szoboszlai: Salah is back taking penalties.

Hungarian international midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai is looking to put behind him the worst week of his Liverpool career as the Champions League returns and the team battles for a direct qualification spot.

The Hungarian captain hit the crossbar with a penalty in the first half of Saturday's 1-1 draw against Burnley, just five days after conceding a goal to Barnsley with a backheel pass inside his own penalty area.

But Szoboszlai still holds a high level of confidence as Liverpool's best player this season, especially after his stunning 35-yard goal in the FA Cup against Barnsley, though he is determined to get back to his best.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday's Champions League match against Olympique Marseille, Szoboszlai said: "For me personally, it's been a tough week." He added regarding his mistake: “I made a mistake against Barnsley, but I must clarify that it wasn’t careless in my opinion. I would have done the same against Arsenal, Manchester City, and Chelsea as well.”

The Hungarian player explained: “I wanted to continue playing and tried to pretend I was passing the ball back to goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. I missed a penalty, but I’ll keep going. I’ll step up to take the next one, and I’m absolutely confident I’ll score.”

However, Szoboszlai may not get another chance to take penalties, as first-choice penalty taker Mohamed Salah has returned from his duties at the Africa Cup of Nations after Egypt’s loss to Nigeria in the third-place match last Saturday.

Szoboszlai has a close friendship with Salah and will let him take penalty duties.

Szoboszlai has a close friendship with Salah and will let him take penalty duties upon his return, explaining: “If he comes back, he’s the first-choice penalty taker, but until he comes back, I’m the first-choice. He’ll give me some advice on what to think about when I miss a penalty because he’s missed a few times, but he keeps going and forgets what happened.”

Szoboszlai indicated that he was in daily contact with Salah during his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations, but declined to provide any details about the Egyptian striker’s mental state. Salah traveled to participate in the continental tournament after a disagreement with manager Arne Slott.

Szoboszlai also raised doubts about Salah’s future with the club. He affirmed: “We talk about everything, but that stays between him and me. He’ll come back, and we’ll move on. He’ll be here; that’s the manager’s and the club’s decision. It’s not up to us; it’s up to him.”
