Before the list is announced... What are Salah's chances of winning the Ballon d'Or?
French magazine France Football is preparing to reveal the list of 30 nominees for the Ballon d'Or, the world's best player, on Thursday. The list is expected to include Egyptian star Mohamed Salah, Spanish Lamine Yamal, and Frenchman Ousmane Dembélé. The awards ceremony will be held on September 22 at the Théâtre du Châtelet.
The list is likely to include several players from Paris Saint-Germain, who won the Champions League last season. This year's award will be based on the results of the previous season rather than the calendar year (from August 1, 2024 to July 31, 2025). Mohamed Salah, the Liverpool star, also stands out. The Egyptian scored 29 goals and provided 18 assists to help his team win the English Premier League, but his Champions League journey ended in the round of 16.
Salah has been nominated for the final list twice before but was unsuccessful in winning the award. The Egyptian star was among the top candidates for the award this season, but his team's exit from the Champions League and their single-title finish diminished his chances of winning it this year.
Lamine Yamal and Ousmane Dembélé are the top candidates for the 2025 award. The French winger won almost every title during the 2024-25 season with Paris Saint-Germain, including the Champions League, Ligue 1, and the Coupe de France. He only missed out on the Club World Cup, after the French capital club lost to Chelsea in the final.
In all, Dembélé, a former Barcelona player, scored 35 goals and provided 16 assists in 53 appearances across all competitions. Meanwhile, the Spanish player's journey with Barcelona ended in the Champions League semifinals, but he won the domestic league and the Copa del Rey.
With Spain, Yamal reached the UEFA Nations League final after a 5-4 semi-final victory over France, scoring two goals. He has also scored 18 goals and provided 25 assists in 55 appearances for Barcelona in all competitions.
