Liverpool legend: "Dislocated shoulder" grants Salah captaincy

Liverpool legend Ian Rush has asked for the vice-captaincy armband to be given to Egyptian star Mohamed Salah after Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure to Real Madrid, citing his infamous injury against Real Madrid seven years ago following a tackle by then-Real Madrid player Sergio Ramos.

Salah was injured in Liverpool's first Champions League final in the first half following a violent tackle from then-Spanish team captain Sergio Ramos. The Egyptian suffered a dislocated shoulder, which even affected his participation with his country at the 2018 World Cup.

Rush, Liverpool's all-time leading scorer, told the Liverpool Echo on Saturday: "Salah should be vice-captain to Virgil van Dijk. He is a key player and continues to be important to the team, and I was delighted when he extended his contract for two years." He continued: "Imagine that he hasn't suffered a single serious injury since his infamous shoulder injury in 2018. This is a testament to his commitment to fitness, his determination to succeed, and his desire to help younger players."

The Welshman, who spent 14 years with Liverpool across two spells in the 1980s and 1990s, continued: "Van Dijk is an amazing leader, but Salah, as a striker, also sets an example. The team needs someone to help him up front, just as Virgil does at the back." Rush leads the Reds' all-time scoring list with 346 goals in 660 appearances, while Salah is third with 245 goals in 401 appearances for Liverpool.
