Small Steps to Incorporate Slow Living Habits into Your Daily Routine

In today's fast-paced and busy world, many people rush from one task to the next, focusing on sticking to schedules and getting as much done as possible each day as possible.

According to The Simplicity Habit, while this approach is beneficial for productivity, it's not helpful for much else. Many could benefit from adopting the concept of slow living.

The idea is simple: living more calmly, thoughtfully, and mindfully can help reduce stress and increase happiness. You can start with small steps by incorporating some slow living habits into your daily routine, and you'll soon find yourself enjoying the little moments more than ever before.

1. Start Your Morning Slowly

Many people wake up to the sound of their alarm clock and automatically begin their morning routine: a quick shower, a cup of coffee, a light breakfast, and then a rush out of the house on their way to their first appointment of the day. It's a surefire way to start the day with enthusiasm.

But you can try some morning habits to start your day more slowly, meaning waking up a little earlier. You'll soon realize that a slower start is worth a few extra minutes of sleep. Here are some steps:

• Change your alarm time so it's set for about an hour before sunrise to start the day more smoothly and wake up more naturally.

• Engage in one or two self-care practices at the beginning of the day. Take a few minutes to journal while enjoying a cup of coffee or breakfast outdoors, or think about three things you're grateful for while brushing your teeth.

• Resist the temptation to reach for your phone the moment you wake up and turn off the TV while you prepare for the day ahead.

2. Enjoy the Outdoors

Slowing down and appreciating the beauty around you costs nothing but time. It’s a wonderful way to add joy and cheer to your day. There are also physical and mental health benefits associated with spending more time outdoors.

You can engage in physical activity such as walking, jogging, or cycling. You can also adopt a more tranquil and relaxing approach, such as reading a book on a park bench, enjoying an afternoon snack on a picnic blanket, or using binoculars to observe birds in the nearest nature reserve or in the surrounding trees.

3. Reduce Screen Time

It’s hard to deny that most societies have become more reliant on technology and screens than ever before. Phones are a lifeline for many, connecting them to information, resources, and each other.

Television has become a source of on-demand entertainment, and it can be difficult to avoid. While eliminating technology and screens entirely from one’s life may not be realistic, reducing them is both possible and beneficial. To achieve this, one must become more aware of the amount of time spent in front of screens, as well as the times when they are used. Then, a reasonable goal should be set and adhered to.

Focus on screen-free activities, such as committing to putting devices away while eating. Setting limits on technology use will help you embrace a slower pace and enjoy the present moment.

4. Make Time for Hobbies

The work-oriented culture that many embrace today doesn’t leave much time for doing the things they love. On the other hand, a more relaxed lifestyle encourages prioritizing things that bring joy—even if they aren’t productive in the traditional sense. You could read a book, try writing poetry, make pottery, knit or embroider, learn how to arrange flowers, focus on yoga, or volunteer for community service.

5. Practice saying "no"

It's important to make time for relaxation, reflection, and fun. In many cases, this means declining commitments to create space and flexibility in your life. Some commitments simply can't be postponed—like a job that provides financial security.

But many other things find their way into your schedule, such as social events, optional dates, or favors from friends. These can be nice, but they aren't essential.

While saying no might not be easy at first, with a little practice, you'll find it easier to stand your ground and stay calm. Saying "no" is a complete statement that doesn't require explanation or excuses.

6. Make home a peaceful place

Your home should feel like your sanctuary. Ultimately, it's difficult to slow down and relax in a cluttered and chaotic space. By adopting a simpler, more streamlined approach to home and getting rid of things that don't add real value, one creates a welcoming and inviting space. It's a comfortable haven, perfect for enjoying a peaceful start to the morning or unwinding after a long day at work.
