A world of new games will be born
Founder of "Razer".. Artificial intelligence will turn the gaming industry upside down
Billionaire Min-Liang Tan, founder and CEO of Razer, a company specializing in gaming technologies, expected that the electronic gaming sector would witness a radical transformation thanks to artificial intelligence, which would reshape every aspect of the industry, from game development to the way they are played.
“From our point of view at Razer, artificial intelligence will not bring about small changes, but rather will cause complete disruption in everything related to the world of gaming,” Tan said in his interview with CNBC’s “Beyond the Valley” program.
The gaming sector is one of the fastest growing creative industries in the world, as it includes more than 3.6 billion players and its annual revenues amount to about $189 billion, according to estimates by the research company “Newzoo”.
AI tools that reshape the experience
Tan explained that AI will not only change the way games are developed, but will extend its impact to distribution methods, marketing, and even the experience of players themselves, saying: “Developers, publishers, and gamers will all use AI tools to develop new ways of creating and playing.”
He revealed that Razer is currently working on a new tool known as Game Co-AI, which uses computer vision to analyze the user's playing style and provide advice for solving tasks or defeating opponents, and its trial version is scheduled to be launched later in 2025.
Artificial intelligence enters e-sports competitions
While the use of artificial intelligence in electronic sports (Esports) has sparked widespread controversy, Tan stressed that the technology may be used in training and not during the matches themselves, explaining that some professional players have already begun to rely on artificial intelligence to hone their skills and analyze their performance, which opens the door to new virtual coaches in the world of gaming.
Game tests are entering the automation phase
Tan noted that AI will also revolutionize game testing (QA) processes, which have traditionally relied on large teams of human testers, saying that his company is currently developing an AI QA Companion tool that is able to detect and record errors and automatically suggest solutions for them. He explained that this stage usually represents about 30% of the development time and cost, but the new tool will speed up the process and increase the efficiency of work teams.
The future of gaming is created by artificial intelligence
While some industry leaders, such as the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, which produces Grand Theft Auto, argue that AI cannot compete with human creativity, Tan believes that the coming years will see the emergence of major games developed entirely with the help of AI, saying: “We may soon see a huge game built from scratch with AI.” He stressed that technology will not eliminate the role of humans, but rather will free them from boring tasks and allow them to focus on true creativity.
From games to a broader technological revolution
Tan concluded his speech by saying that the impact of artificial intelligence in the world of games will extend to other sectors, as happened with many technologies that were born within the gaming industry and then changed the course of modern technology. He added: “Many technology innovations started from games, and I believe that the future of artificial intelligence will also be born from the world of games.”
