Shooting in Austria leaves 10 dead, stabbing in France

In two separate incidents on Tuesday, 10 people were killed and several others injured in an armed attack inside a school in the Austrian city of Graz. Meanwhile, a school principal in France was stabbed to death by a student.

The Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) quoted local police as saying that several people, including students and teachers, were seriously injured. It was also reported that the suspect, a student, is believed to have committed suicide. Police announced the launch of a large-scale security operation across the country. Authorities have not yet announced the motive for the attack or the identities of the victims and the attacker.

Student Stabs School Principal... Kills Her

In another incident, a school principal was stabbed to death with a knife by a student in the town of Nogent, eastern France, according to Agence France-Presse. The student was arrested after stabbing the 31-year-old principal while searching her bags.

Syrian Asylum Seeker

Last February, an attack in southern Austria left a 14-year-old boy dead and five others injured, according to police, who arrested a 23-year-old Syrian asylum seeker. Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner declared the attack "ISIS-related." Speaking to reporters in the city of Villach, where the attack occurred, the minister said, "It's an ISIS-linked attack," noting that the suspect, a 23-year-old Syrian asylum seeker, "had been radicalized online over a short period."

The attacker was immediately arrested after another Syrian, a delivery worker, intervened when the attacker ran him over with his car, according to police. It turned out that the asylum seeker had valid papers and was not known to the police. Such attacks are extremely rare in Austria. In 2020, a radicalized man killed four people in Vienna in the deadliest mass shooting in the country in decades.
