Washington: We will pressure Iran to prevent it from obtaining a nuclear weapon

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stressed that his country "needs to put more pressure on Iran, so that it stops doing activities that ultimately try to obtain a nuclear weapon."

Rubio's statements to Fox News came at a time when new intelligence information about the Iranian nuclear program revealed that a secret team of the country's scientists is exploring a faster, if more primitive, approach to developing an atomic weapon, if Tehran's leadership decides to race to obtain a bomb, according to current and former US officials.

The intelligence assessment also warned that Iranian weapons engineers and scientists were essentially looking for a shortcut that would enable them to convert their growing stockpile of nuclear fuel into a workable weapon in a matter of months, rather than a year or more, but only if Tehran decides to change its current approach.

With nearly two weeks of his presidency, a new special envoy for Iran affairs has yet to be appointed to the US State Department. The US President also confirmed that Steve Witkoff, his envoy to the Middle East, will not be his envoy for the Iranian issue.

"The Iran issue will come"

While more than one person who previously worked in the US administration confirmed that the Iran issue "will come in due time. Others also explained that the Iranian file can wait, especially since huge files such as Ukraine and competition with China are also waiting.

Tehran is ready for dialogue

While several Iranian officials spoke about Tehran's readiness for dialogue، US President Donald Trump was clear in his policies towards Iran during his first term, as he wants it to live within its borders as it wishes, but without a nuclear program and without interfering in the affairs of neighboring countries.

It is worth noting that Iran, whose file Trump left four years ago, is now a different country, as it has no air defenses and no Syria. While Hamas and Hezbollah have been subjected to painful blows by Israel.
