Somalia's outgoing President under immense pressure

As reported on Tuesday, deputy speaker of Somalia's Senate filed a lawsuit against Somalia's President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo for the dispatch of youths to Eritrea.

"The recruitment process was ambiguous and some youths were misled with misinformation that they will be taken to Qatar to work" Debate Deputy Speaker Apshir Ahmed said.

"The silence of government agencies shows that the youths were wrongly recruited and taken to Eritria where thay are being used for human rights violations" Aphsir added.

Opposition leaders poked holes in the recruitment process while others blamed President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo for engaging in clandestine deals at the expense of poor youths.

The leader of opposition Wajadir party led critics in accusing Farmajo of sanctioning the deployment which he termed as illegal. He urged Prime Minister Roble to meet the parents of the young soldiers and give them proper reports.

Somalia's President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has repeatedly proved unreliable in overseeing the parliamentary and presidential elections as well as political transition in the country.

At the president’s request, the lower house of parliament  adopted a special law that extended the terms of current office holders for two years and abandoned a Sept. 17, 2020, agreement on indirect elections, reverting instead to a one-person, one-vote model.

Those decisions sparked widespread opposition, leading to the mobilization of militias, exposing divisions within Somali security forces, and resulting in violent clashes on April 25.
