Farmajo is a threat to Somalia's stability

The opposition candidates in Somalia accused president Farmajo of posing a threat to the Country's stability after failing to a free and fair election at the end of his 4-year mandate expiring in February 2021.

The Somali election implementation committee has postponed the election of the Upper House of Parliament by one week. In a new schedule for the election, the commission set 5-6 January to register candidates and 7-14 to hold the elections.

The previous timetable had the election of the Upper House at 31 December to 6 January, but the disputes continue to delay the election.

The central government and opposition parties, as well as some regional states, are locked in a dispute over the electoral body, with many demanding the formation of a new poll body.

Somalia’s opposition has maintained it will boycott the elections, demanded reforms and raised concerns about the election commission and its capacity to hold a free, fair and credible vote.

Known as the Union of Presidential Candidates, the group organised protests in Mogadishu which ended after several days with claims of live ammunition being used by police to disperse its supporters. The group has charged that the selected members of the polling teams includes spies and cronies of the president.
