The Arqo administrative unit in the Al-Barqiq locality, northern Sudan, narrowly escaped a disaster after a fuel tanker exploded inside the "Shabina" station in the Inqari area (550 km north of Khartoum) during the unloading of a gasoline shipment. The incident sparked panic among residents and nearly resulted in a large-scale explosion that threatened lives and property.

Deadly Heat Ignites Gasoline and Explodes Tanker

According to field sources and initial technical analyses, the sharp rise in temperatures led to a buildup of pressure and vapors inside the tanker, which was loaded with highly flammable gasoline. This caused the explosion during the unloading process into the station's storage tanks.

Seconds to Save a City: Driver Blows into Flames

In a crucial moment, the tanker driver displayed extraordinary courage, driving the burning truck away from the fuel tanks and main station facilities in a heroic act that directly contributed to containing the fire and preventing it from spreading into a full-blown explosion that could have turned the area into a raging inferno.

Initial reports indicate that the incident resulted in the loss of approximately 10,000 gallons of gasoline, in addition to material damage to parts of the station caused by the flames. No casualties were reported, and the driver miraculously escaped unharmed.

Authorities Issue Warning: Avoid Unloading at Midday

Following the incident, the local petroleum director inspected the site of the explosion to assess the extent of the damage, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to safety procedures during fuel unloading operations, especially given the high temperatures in the region.

The local official also urged avoiding fuel unloading during midday hours, opting instead for cooler morning or evening periods, and ensuring the readiness of firefighting equipment and emergency systems at stations.

The incident highlights the growing risks associated with transporting and storing petroleum products in desert environments and underscores the crucial role that quick thinking and individual courage can play in preventing disasters.
