Pop singer Dua Lipa is suing Samsung for $15 million over image unauthorized use

Pop singer Dua Lipa has filed a lawsuit against South Korean tech giant Samsung, alleging that the company used her image to market televisions without her consent.

According to Variety, the singer is seeking $15 million in damages in the lawsuit. She claims that the company used her image without her knowledge and without compensation on the packaging of its televisions, the magazine reports.

The lawsuit alleges that the South Korean company has been using Dua Lipa's image on television packaging since 2025. After noticing this, the 30-year-old singer demanded that the company cease using her image permanently. However, the lawsuit claims that Samsung responded to the request with "indifference and callousness."

Samsung reportedly rejected Dua Lipa's request, according to the magazine's report. The lawsuit states that "Ms. Lipa's face was prominently used in a widespread marketing campaign for a consumer product without her knowledge, without compensation, and without her having any say, control, or participation."

The lawsuit adds, "Ms. Lipa did not authorize this use, nor would she have," and states that the brand profited from what was perceived as Dua Lipa's implicit endorsement of its products, despite her not having consented to it. The lawsuit also indicates that Lipa owns the copyright to the image used on the packaging. The photo dates back to the 2024 Austin City Limits festival.

The lawsuit also cites comments attributed to alleged fans on the X platform (formerly Twitter), indicating that they purchased the TV because of Lipa's endorsement. One user is quoted in the lawsuit as saying, "I wasn't planning on buying a TV, but I saw the box and decided to buy it."

Another user added, "I would only buy that TV because Dua Lipa is on it. That's how obsessed I am with her, that's how much I love her." Another person, according to the lawsuit, said, "Just put Dua Lipa on it." The lawsuit alleges that Dua Lipa has built a "luxury brand" for herself and is "extremely selective" in her product endorsements.

The complaint includes allegations of copyright infringement, violation of California's copyright law, a federal Lanham Act claim, and trademark claims. It was filed in the Central District Court of California. Samsung has not yet responded to the allegations.
