The announcement of plans to close America's largest train station during the 2026 World Cup, scheduled to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, has angered New Yorkers, threatening the plans of approximately 132,000 daily commuters.

According to a media report, New Yorkers will be barred from accessing parts of North America's busiest transit hub throughout the World Cup this summer. Access to Pennsylvania Station in New York will be restricted to fans attending matches, prior to the start of the eight World Cup games to be held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, including the final.

The train station, located in the heart of Manhattan, is a major gateway for fans traveling from the city to MetLife Stadium to watch the matches. North Jersey reported that, as a result, Pennsylvania Station will close for four hours before each match, and only World Cup ticket holders will be permitted entry. Fans will have their tickets checked at the station entrances located at 33rd and 32nd Streets along Seventh Avenue.

Other passengers using Amtrak and Long Island Rail Road services will be directed to alternative entrances to access platforms in other parts of the station. NJ Transit passengers will not be able to connect to trains bound for New Jersey from Pennsylvania Station during the four hours leading up to kickoff.

This announcement has sparked outrage among New Yorkers and New Jersey commuters, who are questioning how they will manage their daily lives with the disruption. It is estimated that approximately 132,000 passengers pass through Pennsylvania Station on weekdays to use NJ Transit services.
