A Blazing Opening: Musical Makes History with $150 Million

Wicked for Good Earns $150 Million

Universal Pictures announced that Wicked for Good earned $150 million in its opening weekend in the United States and Canada, setting a record for a Broadway musical adaptation and becoming one of the highest-grossing musicals of all time.

Box office statistics from Universal Pictures and Comscore show that Wicked II, starring Cynthia Erivo as Elvapa and Ariana Grande as Glinda, achieved the third-best opening weekend for a musical domestically, behind Disney's 2019 computer-generated live-action remake of The Lion King and the 2017 remake of Beauty and the Beast.

Wicked for Good also helped pull the North American box office out of a nine-week slump, though Comscore data shows that total ticket sales fell short of $100 million.

"It's absolutely fantastic to see all the hard work that filmmakers Mark Platt and John Cho have put in over the years, and our exceptional cast of Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and Jonathan Bailey, pay off so generously," said Jim Orr, president of domestic distribution at Universal.
