UN: 14,000 babies at risk of death within 48 hours in Gaza
A senior UN official said that approximately 14,000 babies in the Gaza Strip could die within 48 hours if aid does not reach them in time.
Tom Fletcher, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, told BBC Radio 4's Today program: "There are 14,000 babies who will die within 48 hours if we cannot reach them. I want to save as many of those 14,000 babies as possible within 48 hours."
The UN official emphasized the "need to flood Gaza with humanitarian aid." Regarding how the UN is delivering aid to this number, Fletcher said: "We have strong teams on the ground, and of course many have been killed."
He added: "We still have a lot of people on the ground, in medical centers and schools trying to assess the needs." He continued, "But this is what we're doing. We'll continue to work. It will be frustrating, and we'll face many obstacles and risks, but I can't think of a better idea than bringing in baby food."
There was no immediate comment from the Israeli government or military on Fletcher's remarks. It's worth noting that Israel resumed sending aid to Gaza on Monday, but the quantities were described as insufficient.
Five trucks loaded with humanitarian aid entered the Strip, the first such delivery since March 2, when Israel banned the entry of goods into the Strip. The shipment included flour, baby food, and medical supplies.
