Historic Sweep: Salah Wins England's Football Writers' Association Award
Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah has won the English Football Writers' Association's Premier League Player of the Year award for the third time, while Arsenal striker Alessia Russo won the Women's Player of the Year award.
The Football Association said in a statement that Salah received 90 percent of the votes from the Football Writers' Association's more than 900 members, the largest winning margin this century. The Egyptian international's Dutch teammate Virgil van Dijk finished second in the poll, ahead of Newcastle United's Alexander Isak and Arsenal's Declan Rice.
Russo, the England striker who scored eight goals in the Women's Champions League to help Arsenal reach the final, beat last year's winner, Manchester City's Khadija Shaw. Salah is the second player to win the award three times after former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry.
Salah leads the Premier League scoring charts with 28 goals this season, helping Liverpool win the title for the second time since joining in 2017. Arsenal striker Mariona Caldente finished third in the poll, while Chelsea captain Millie Bright came in fourth. Salah and Russo will receive the award at a ceremony in London on May 22.
