Water Intoxication"... A Warning from an Egyptian" Doctor as Temperatures Rise

Dr. Gamal Shaaban, former dean of the National Heart Institute in Egypt, revealed the secret behind water intoxication, which leads to kidney damage.

Dr. Gamal Shaaban, former dean of the National Heart Institute in Egypt, revealed the secret behind "water intoxication," which leads to kidney damage. He emphasized that the body only needs 3 liters of water per day, and "exceeding that will lead to kidney damage," as he put it.

Dr. Gamal Shaaban noted on his official Facebook page that "the symptoms of water intoxication include disturbances in brain function due to sodium deficiency, along with impaired consciousness, which in turn can lead to death in severe cases." He emphasized that athletes are most susceptible to water intoxication, especially during marathons in extremely hot weather.

Dr. Gamal Shaaban wrote about water intoxication, saying, "The body needs about 3 liters of water per day (and We made from water every living thing). This is true, but (eat and drink, but be not excessive), for if something exceeds its limit, it will have its opposite effect."

Gamal Shaaban added, "Therefore, if a person drinks 1,000 cc of water (a liter) very quickly, the kidneys will be unable to eliminate this amount of water, as they can only eliminate 800 cc per hour, leading to dilution (a dilution of blood salts) (hyponatremia)."

Regarding the symptoms of water intoxication, Dr. Gamal Shaaban said, "Sodium deficiency leads to impaired brain function, impaired consciousness, and possibly death in severe cases."

To treat water intoxication, which can lead to death, Gamal Shaaban said, "Stop drinking excess water, take diuretics, sodium tablets, or sodium solution." To prevent water intoxication, Gamal Shaaban said, "Drink plenty of water, but slowly, throughout the day, and do not drink quickly," as he put it.

Woman dies from water poisoning

In August 2023, in a shocking incident, a 35-year-old American woman died from water intoxication, also known as hyponatremia, after drinking too much water in a short period of time.

Ashley Summers, a mother of two, was spending the weekend with her family at Lake Freeman, Indiana. Before returning home, she experienced dizziness, a headache, and symptoms of dehydration, which prompted her to drink four 500 ml bottles of water in just 20 minutes.

After returning home, Ashley lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital due to severe brain swelling. However, she never regained consciousness and succumbed to the water toxicity that led to her death.
