Germany: Israel's attacks in Gaza have gone beyond justification for the war on terror

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized Israel's continued attacks and military operation in the Gaza Strip on Monday. Merz said that the latest Israeli attacks on Gaza are causing civilian casualties, which can no longer be justified as a war on terror.

In a television interview with WDR, he added, "Harming civilians to this extent, as has increasingly happened in recent days, cannot be justified as a war on Hamas terror." He confirmed that he plans to hold a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this week to urge him "not to exaggerate."

Sources revealed that there is a growing likelihood that US President Donald Trump will announce a ceasefire in Gaza in the coming days, a move expected to be part of a broader deal that includes the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas.

Sources told that there are "expectations that Trump will announce a ceasefire in Gaza within days." The sources added that "Trump's announcement of a ceasefire in Gaza will come as part of a deal that includes the release of Israeli hostages."

Trump said earlier on Sunday that he believed he had good news coming with Hamas regarding Gaza. Trump told reporters, "We want to see if we can stop the fighting" in Gaza. He continued, "We have spoken with Israel, and we want to see if we can stop this entire situation as soon as possible."

Bahbah's Proposal

Israeli media quoted an official as saying on Monday that Israel "completely rejects" American businessman Bishara Bahbah's proposal for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Israel's Channel 14 reported that the proposal includes the release of 10 living hostages in exchange for a permanent ceasefire and discussions about the "day after" in Gaza. Local sources revealed that the new proposal also includes the release of five hostages on the first day, adding, "It also includes a discussion of the issue of deceased hostages, which will only take place during the ceasefire period."

An official Israeli source told Israeli media: "The new proposal is rejected and will not be accepted by any Israeli government. We are committed to the Witkoff proposal (Steve Witkoff, US President Donald Trump's envoy)." The official added, "The new proposal is very, very far from the formula that Israel can accept, and accepting it would effectively be a surrender to Hamas."
