Students in Iran Call to Continue Protests Over the Killing of Amir Mohammad Khaleghi

Students at the University of Tehran and Tarbiat Modares University in the Iranian capital are planning to hold a protest on Sunday, February 16, in continuation of the protests over the killing of student Amir Mohammad Khaleghi. Students at other universities have also written protest slogans.

The students at Tarbiat Modares University stressed in their call that their main demand is to secure the roads surrounding the university instead of turning the campus into a security zone by security forces. Photos have been circulated showing written slogans and hand-made banners hung by students at Shahid Beheshti University in support of the protests at the University of Tehran.

Among the slogans written were: “Death to Khamenei” and “The blood that is shed cannot be erased by anything.” A number of protesting students also held a protest on Saturday, February 15, in front of the central library of Shahid Beheshti University.

At the University of Tehran, Friday witnessed a sit-in inside the Koi University dormitory, where students sat on the ground in protest. But security forces and plainclothes officers surrounded the university, leading to the arrest of four students.

The Amirkabir news website reported on Saturday that the four detained students at the University of Tehran were released after their colleagues insisted. According to reports, one of the protesting students suffered a broken nose after being assaulted by security forces. Conflicting statements on the arrest of suspects in the killing of Iranian student

There were contradictory statements on Saturday evening regarding the arrest of the perpetrators of the killing of Amir Mohammad Khaleghi. While the public prosecutor and the judiciary announced the arrest of the suspects, Abbas Ali Mohammadian, the commander of the Greater Tehran Police, said on a television program that “until this moment, no official results have been issued.”

In an attempt to clarify the situation, the judiciary spokesman’s office confirmed on Sunday that “some suspects have been identified and arrested, and investigations are still ongoing.” Following the killing of Amir Mohammad Khaleghi, the Iranian Ministry of Science pledged to install two security booths in sensitive areas of the university, as well as surveillance cameras in the corridors to enhance security. Ali Hossein Rezaian, Vice President of Tehran University for Student Affairs, also confirmed that installing cameras in some locations is under consideration.

Amir Mohammad Khaleqi, a 19-year-old student in the Department of Business Administration at Tehran University, was killed on the evening of February 13 after being attacked with a knife by thieves near the Koi University dormitory. The Student Council noted in a statement that incidents of violence and theft in the back area of the Koi University dormitory are repeated weekly, which provided the appropriate environment for this crime to occur.
