Deadly Houthi attack in Yemen

Houthi militia carried out an attack in the southwestern Yemeni province of Taiz on Monday, resulting in one fatality and two children injured, according to a report by the state-operated Saba news agency. The attack was specifically aimed at the residential neighborhood of Rawdah, employing “indiscriminate shelling using several mortars.”

Taiz has been a focal point in Yemen’s ongoing civil war since the Houthi rebels made an attempt to seize control of the country back in 2015. While the rebels have managed to surround the city, they have not yet been able to oust Yemeni government forces from all of Taiz. Locals and officials confirm that the Houthis often target Taiz with artillery shelling and sniper attacks.

The Houthi group has yet to comment on the latest assault. Yemen has been entrenched in civil war since 2014, when Houthi rebels overran the capital Sanaa and large portions of northern Yemen.

The conflict prompted a Saudi-led coalition to intervene in 2015, aiming to reestablish the internationally recognized Yemeni government. The war has resulted in thousands of deaths and has triggered the world’s most severe humanitarian crisis.
