US Polls show Biden's popularity backtracking
For the last month or so, the dominant narrative in American politics has been that President Joe Biden – and Democrats more generally – are on the comeback trail.
Their odds of keeping the Senate look better than they did earlier in the midterm cycle and there are even some pundits who suggest Democrats might be able to eke out a House majority, CNN reorted.
In a new CNN polling in Arizona and Nevada, Biden’s job approval rating among registered voters sits at 39% in both states. His disapproval in both states is 60%.
But it’s not anomalous. In CNN’s Poll of Polls, the average of the most recent national polls of adults that meet CNN’s standards for reporting, Biden’s approval is at 39%.
With just five weeks to go before the Nov. 8 midterm elections, a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll completed on Tuesday found that Biden's public approval rating edged lower this week and was close to the lowest level of his presidency.
Analysts believe the president's sagging popularity, which drifted as low as 39% has helped drive expectations that his Democratic Party will lose control of the U.S. House of Representatives in November, and possibly the Senate as well.
The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted online in English throughout the United States, gathered responses from 1,003 adults, including 448 Democrats and 383 Republicans. It has a credibility interval - a measure of precision - of four percentage points.
Taking office in January 2021 in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, Biden's term has been marked by the economic scars of the global health crisis, including soaring inflation.
