Scientists Determine the Number of Hours of Sleep That Accelerates Aging

Numerous scientific discussions and studies have long been conducted regarding the ideal number of hours of sleep needed to ensure a healthy, disease-free life. In the latest of these studies, scientists discovered that sleeping less than 6.4 hours or more than 7.8 hours per night can accelerate age-related changes and increase the risk of chronic diseases.

According to Gazeta.ru, Junhao Wen, an associate professor at Columbia University, notes that researchers analyzed data from nearly half a million people, comparing their sleep patterns and their correlation with the health of various organs and systems. 

It turned out that a sleep duration between 6.4 and 7.8 hours per night was the most beneficial, as these individuals showed slower signs of biological aging and enjoyed better overall health.

Researchers also discovered that study participants who slept significantly less or more than this range were more prone to symptoms of accelerated aging.

Insomnia and poor sleep are commonly associated with numerous diseases. Scientists indicate that sleep deprivation is linked to an increased risk of depression, anxiety disorders, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease. According to Junhao Wen, sleep plays a crucial role in maintaining bodily functions. During sleep, metabolism, the immune system, and many other internal processes that affect health and longevity are restored. Researchers emphasize that poor sleep is not the direct cause of disease, but it can often be an early indicator of underlying health problems.
