A Historic Moment: Barcelona Defeats Real Madrid and Wins La Liga

Barcelona made history, becoming the first team to officially win the Spanish league title as a result of their El Clásico victory, after defeating their arch-rivals Real Madrid 2-0 on Sunday in the 35th round of the competition.

Barcelona faced one of the worst sporting crises in recent years after the COVID-19 pandemic exposed the true extent of their financial situation, a consequence of the previous administration under Josep Maria Bartomeu. 

The club's debts reached €1.4 billion, which impacted his successor, Joan Laporta, who was unable to renew the contract of club legend Lionel Messi, leading to his free transfer to Paris Saint-Germain in August 2021.

Despite these crises, the Catalan team continued its dominance of La Liga in recent years, winning the title six times in the last ten editions, while losing it to Real Madrid three times and to Atlético Madrid once.

Barcelona scored twice through Marcus Rashford and Ferran Torres in the 9th and 18th minutes of the first half, respectively, to take their points tally to 91, 14 points ahead of second-placed Real Madrid with three rounds remaining. Barcelona thus retained the title they celebrated last season after finishing ahead of Real Madrid.
