Ray-Ban Meta Scandal: Kenyan Employees Access Users' Private Videos
A recent journalistic investigation has highlighted growing concerns about the privacy of users of smart glasses developed by Meta in collaboration with Ray-Ban. The investigation revealed that videos captured by these glasses may be viewed by employees working for a company contracted by Meta in Kenya.
Users' Lives Reach Kenya
According to the investigation, some of the videos recorded by Ray-Ban Meta glasses are sent to a company called Sama, an outsourcing firm that works with Meta to train its artificial intelligence systems, as reported by TechCrunch.
The company employs what are known as "data commentators," staff members who review the video footage to help Meta's AI systems recognize everyday objects and events within the video. According to testimonies from employees who spoke on condition of anonymity, they are able to view multiple clips of users' daily lives as part of their work training the AI systems.
AI Training Behind Video Review
Information indicates that these human reviews are part of the training process for Meta AI systems, where the video clips help improve the system's ability to understand scenes and answer user queries. However, the investigation points out that many users may not realize that using the glasses requires consent to share some data with the company's infrastructure, which may include sending videos to human review teams.
Privacy Concerns
According to the report, some clips may contain sensitive information such as details of daily life or data visible in the background, like bank cards or documents, even though the systems are supposed to blur faces and sensitive information before reviewing them. However, the investigation suggests that these systems may not always function perfectly, which could lead to the exposure of some unintended details.
Limited Response from Meta
The investigation revealed that journalists contacted Meta for clarification regarding its data handling practices, but the company simply referred to the terms outlined in its privacy policy. Sama also did not issue an official comment on the investigation's findings.
A New Challenge for Augmented Reality Glasses
This issue comes at a time when major technology companies are betting on smart glasses as a new stage in the evolution of personal computing, with many experts believing they could become a future alternative to smartphones. However, the growing debate surrounding user privacy could pose a significant challenge to the widespread adoption of these devices.
