The happiest skater on Earth captivates Winter Olympics fans

American figure skater Alyssa Liu received widespread praise for her zest for life after her stunning gold medal win in the women's singles competition at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics on Thursday.

NBC sports analyst and former figure skater Tara Lipinski wrote on her Instagram account: "Alyssa, you were a magician on the ice. The way you showed us all, so effortlessly, what pure joy and passion on the ice mean gave me goosebumps. I love how authentic you are, both on and off the ice. You are an inspiration to us all."

Liu said: "Before the freestyle skating began, I was wearing this new outfit that I was so excited to show off on the big stage. I am so happy with my performance." Liu added: “When I see other people smiling, because I see them in the audience, I can’t help but smile. I can’t hide my feelings.”

USA Today described Liu as “the happiest figure skater on Earth.” The 20-year-old skater wore a dazzling gold jumpsuit and sported a constant smile in Milan.

Liu retired from figure skating in 2012 before returning last season and immediately becoming world champion. The American skater has now won two Olympic gold medals in the individual and team events.
