Anthropic Launches Voice Mode for Keyboard-Free Programming

Anthropic has announced the launch of a voice mode feature within its Cloud Code programming assistant, a move that promotes interactive programming based on voice commands and pushes towards smoother and freer development experiences. Anthropic engineer Tharik Shehbar revealed on the X platform that the feature has begun rolling out gradually to about 5% of users, with the rollout to be expanded in the coming weeks.

Voice-Based Programming

The new feature allows developers to interact with Cloud Code using voice instead of typing, according to a report published by TechCrunch. To activate it, simply enter the /voice command, then verbally give the request, such as: "Restructure the authentication layer," and the system will execute the instructions directly. The goal, according to the company, is to reduce reliance on the keyboard and streamline workflows, especially for repetitive tasks or during code review.

Questions about Technical Limitations

So far, Anthropic has not revealed the technical limitations of the feature, either in terms of the number of voice interactions or any potential usage restrictions. It is also unclear whether the company has partnered with an external audio-to-text technology provider, such as ElevenLabs, with whom it has previously been reported to be in collaboration talks. The company has not officially commented on media inquiries regarding technical details.

Intense Competition in AI-Powered Programming Tools

The launch of voice mode comes amidst fierce competition among AI-powered programming tools, most notably GitHub via Copilot, Google, and OpenAI, in addition to tools like Cursor. Despite the intense competition, Cloud Code stands out as one of the most widely used tools among developers.

Last February, Anthropic revealed that its estimated annual recurring revenue for the tool exceeded $2.5 billion, more than double its projected level at the beginning of 2026. The number of weekly active users has also doubled since January.

A remarkable rise for the Cloud app

In parallel, the Cloud app for smartphones has seen significant growth in users, especially after the company refused to allow the US Department of Defense to use its technology for internal surveillance or the development of autonomous weapons.

Following this, the app topped the list of most downloaded apps in the US App Store, briefly surpassing ChatGBT. By incorporating voice into its programming environment, Anthropic is betting on making interaction with code more like natural dialogue, at a time when intelligent development tools are redefining how software is written.
