Sam Altman.. ChatGBT Returns to Over 10% Monthly Growth

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told his employees that the company's chatbot, ChatGBT, has returned to achieving over 10% month-on-month growth, according to CNBC. An internal message from Altman on Slack also indicated that OpenAI is preparing to launch an "updated chatbot model" this week, CNBC reported.

More than 800 million people use ChatGBT weekly, but Google and Anthropic are gaining ground in the market. OpenAI declared a state of "maximum alert" in December to improve ChatGBT and temporarily halted several projects to focus on this effort.

In his letter on Friday, Altman said that the company’s coding product, Codex, grew by nearly 50% compared to the previous week. It is a direct competitor to Anthropic’s Cloud Code tool, which has seen a surge in adoption over the past year.

Anthropic is a software leader whose AI technologies have been widely adopted by software developers. The company is actively pursuing commercial deals for products like Cloud Cowork, which performs computing tasks for administrative staff.

AI startups, including Microsoft’s OpenAI and Anthropic, are intensifying their competition to attract new customers and increase their market share. Google’s Gemini app surpassed 750 million monthly active users by the end of the last quarter. Last week, OpenAI launched a new programming paradigm called GPT-5.3-Codex.

OpenAI announced that it will begin displaying ads in ChatGBT to some users in the United States, as part of its intensive efforts to generate revenue from the AI-powered chatbot to fund the high costs of developing this technology.
