Sri Lanka has announced the discovery of a massive purple star sapphire, the largest ever found. It is valued at no less than $400 million.

The gemstone, known as the "Pure Star of the Earth," weighs 3,563 carats. Displayed in the capital city of Colombo, the stone features a six-ray star pattern, making it a rare gem among rubies. According to the Mirror, gem expert Ashan Amarasinghe confirmed that this is the largest documented sapphire in the world, highlighting its unique and distinctive star pattern.

The sapphire was discovered in 2023 near Ratnapura, known as the "City of Gems." After purchasing it along with other stones, its owners didn't realize its true value until two years later, prompting them to officially document and have it certified by two specialized laboratories.

International appraisers estimate the stone's value at around $400 million (£298 million), making it one of the most expensive gemstones ever discovered. Sri Lanka is renowned worldwide for its rare rubies, prized for their distinctive colors, purity, and natural brilliance.

The discovery of the "Pure Star of the Earth" comes at a time when the gem world is witnessing the emergence of rare gems that have broken records at international auctions. These include the "Regent of Kashmir" blue ruby, which sold for $9.5 million, and the "Black Star of Eve" and "Eye of Hope" green beryl, both of which have set Guinness World Records.
