A Bottle of Milk on Trump's Desk... What's the Secret Behind It?
US President Donald Trump signed a law allowing whole milk to be reinstated in school meals, a move that overturns restrictions imposed since the Obama administration on higher-fat milk options.
"Whether you're a Democrat or a Republican, whole milk is great," Trump said during a signing ceremony at the White House, attended by lawmakers, dairy farmers and their children, with a bottle of milk on his desk.
The signing of the law comes days after the release of the US Dietary Guidelines for 2025–2030, which emphasize the consumption of full-fat dairy products as part of a healthy diet, a shift from previous recommendations that advised limiting dairy options to low-fat or fat-free choices for children over the age of two.
The change is expected to take effect this fall, although school nutrition and dairy industry officials indicated that some schools may need more time to assess demand and adjust supply chains. According to the new guidelines, schools will be required to offer a wider range of milk options, including whole milk, lactose-free milk, and non-dairy alternatives that meet the required standards.
Many nutrition experts believe that whole milk is rich in nutrients, and several studies indicate that there is no tangible health benefit to choosing low-fat milk over whole milk. In fact, some research has linked whole milk consumption to a reduced risk of obesity in children. Conversely, other research shows that changes made to school nutrition programs during the Obama administration helped slow the rate of obesity increases among children and adolescents in the United States.
