Egypt: Official Warning After a Surge in H1N1 Infections
The Egyptian Drug Authority issued an urgent medical warning following a rise in influenza cases, urging adherence to medical guidelines before taking any medication. The Authority emphasized that choosing the appropriate medication varies from case to case, and that misuse can lead to undesirable side effects or greater health risks. It stressed the importance of consulting a doctor or pharmacist to select the right medication for the symptoms and to avoid doubling doses.
The Authority strongly warned against using antibiotics without a prescription, noting their ineffectiveness against viral infections such as the common cold and their contribution to the spread of antimicrobial resistance. It recommended limiting the use of nasal drops to two to three days to avoid potential side effects. Reading the medication leaflet is considered essential before use, as it contains vital information.
The Drug Authority indicated that awareness of the safe use of medications is the first line of defense for public health, urging citizens to consult specialists if they experience any symptoms to ensure safe and effective treatment, especially given the current wave that is prompting many to self-medicate.
This warning comes amid a significant rise in the number of colds and seasonal flu cases in Egypt during the winter. This increase is attributed to lower temperatures and increased social interaction in enclosed spaces, in addition to other factors such as weakened immunity.
Ministry of Health Advice and Instructions
Amid this annual wave, the Ministry of Health confirmed that the situation is under control, but warned against self-medicating without consulting a specialist. This prompted the Egyptian Drug Authority to issue an urgent warning focusing on the safe use of cold medicines. Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, said: "It is important to boost immunity, consult a doctor, adhere to the prescribed treatment, and rest at home when experiencing flu symptoms."
The Ministry of Health and Population published posts on its Facebook page containing advice on protecting against seasonal flu. The Ministry advised citizens to wash their hands frequently, cover their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, avoid touching their face, disinfect surfaces, consult a doctor, adhere to the prescribed treatment, and rest.
