A hotel in Istanbul was evacuated after a Turkish-German family suffered food poisoning, resulting in the death of a mother and her two children.

The father remains in critical condition. All guests of the unnamed hotel, located in the Fatih district, were transferred to other hotels. The number of guests was not specified. Two other hotel guests were hospitalized on Saturday after suffering from nausea and vomiting, according to the newspaper BirGün.

For a vacation

Police reported that the family is Turkish but resides in Germany and had come to Istanbul for a vacation. The family began feeling unwell on Wednesday after consuming food from the hotel and street vendors in the Ortaköy tourist district on the European side of the Bosphorus.

All four family members were taken to the hospital, but the two children, aged 3 and 6, died on Thursday, and the mother died the following day, according to the Justice Minister. Meanwhile, the Istanbul Regional Director of the Turkish Health Ministry, Abdullah Emre Güner, stated on the X platform Friday night that the father remained in critical condition.

Investigators discovered that a ground-floor room in the hotel had recently been treated with pesticides, according to the Hurriyet newspaper's website. Police arrested a hotel employee and two pest control workers, bringing the total number of people detained in connection with the incident to seven.
