China urges US to address TikTok issue through dialogue

China's Ministry of Commerce said in a statement on Friday that China will review issues related to TikTok in accordance with laws and regulations and urges the United States to resolve concerns through dialogue based on mutual respect and equal consultation, according to Reuters.

The US Treasury Department said that the short video app owned by Chinese company ByteDance, which faces a potential ban in the United States unless it transfers ownership to American companies, will be on the agenda of a meeting with senior Chinese officials next week in Madrid.

The Treasury Department said that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent plans to meet with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and other senior officials next week in Madrid to continue discussions on trade and economic issues, as well as the status of TikTok.

These meetings are part of Bessent's September 12-18 trip to Spain and the UK. US President Donald Trump has postponed the deadline for ByteDance to find a US buyer for TikTok's US operations three times, most recently extending it by 90 days to June 19.

With the deadline approaching on September 17, TikTok's fate in the US remains unclear, with no sign of a deal. Trump said in August that he had US buyers lined up to buy TikTok and that he had not yet spoken with Chinese President Xi Jinping about the app, but would do so at the appropriate time.
