Norwegian boy suspected of detonating a hand grenade
Police in Norway arrested a 13-year-old boy on suspicion of making and detonating a hand grenade in a neighborhood in Oslo.
The massive explosion occurred in the Bislett neighborhood of Oslo at 8:43 p.m. on Tuesday. No injuries were reported, and the incident occurred near the campus of Oslo Mette University. The British newspaper Metro quoted Øyvind Hammarvold, the director of operations for the Oslo Police, as saying that the explosion was caused by a hand grenade.
The explosion triggered emergency alerts on several mobile phones, and images from the scene showed an unexploded hand grenade in the middle of a pedestrian walkway. Police responded to the unexploded grenade minutes after the attack, and the area was searched for more explosive devices.
Oslo Police Chief Brian Skutnes said a minor had been arrested. The child arrested was reportedly born in 2012. Police believe the explosion was the result of a "confrontation between criminals," indicating that several people were involved in the blast.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing drones hovering over the area, and residents were asked to stay away from windows. Tina Svegum, 25, said she and her roommate in Bilstedet heard a "huge bang." A driver reported that the "violent explosion" damaged his car while driving in the area.
