Canada Announces Intention to Recognize the State of Palestine During the UN General Assembly

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that his country will recognize the State of Palestine during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, scheduled for next September, with the aim of preserving the chances of implementing the two-state solution.

Carney said in a press conference, "We intend to recognize the State of Palestine at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2025." Canada had previously affirmed that it would not recognize a Palestinian state until a final peace agreement was reached with Israel. However, Carney explained that the reality on the ground, including the worsening hunger crisis in Gaza, threatens to diminish the chances of establishing a Palestinian state.

Carney noted that "Canada condemns the Israeli government's creation of the conditions for a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza," stressing that recognition of a Palestinian state is essential to preserving the prospects for peace.

The Canadian position comes one day after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that his country would formally recognize the State of Palestine by next September unless Israel takes concrete steps to allow aid into Gaza, commit to the two-state solution, and refrain from annexing the West Bank.
