Magnetic Storms Today and Tomorrow: Report Warns

Magnetic storms affecting our planet are usually formed as a result of solar flares and eruptions and can cause disruptions to power systems.

The Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences has warned of the possibility of Earth being affected by magnetic storms on Wednesday and Thursday. The Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences indicated that Earth could be exposed to weak magnetic storms caused by a coronal hole on the sun on July 23 and 24.

The report, published on Telegram, stated: "There is a possibility of relatively long-term geomagnetic disturbances, reaching the level of a weak magnetic storm... peaking today, Wednesday." The report also indicated that the possibility of magnetic storms will remain high on Thursday, July 24. The magnetic storms are caused by a medium-sized coronal hole, currently located approximately on the Sun-Earth line.

It added: "The growth in solar wind intensity is expected to be moderate, so the magnetic storms affecting Earth are unlikely to be severe. The probability of a second-level magnetic storm is estimated at 6%. The total duration of disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field is not expected to exceed two days.

The magnetic storms that affect our planet are usually formed by solar flares and eruptions. These storms can cause disruptions to power systems and affect the migration of birds and animals. Severe storms can also disrupt communication and navigation systems.
