NVIDIA to manufacture AI chips in America for the first time
US chipmaker NVIDIA plans to produce AI chips for supercomputers for the first time in the United States, the company announced.
The company said Wednesday it has acquired approximately 1 million square feet of industrial land for the production and testing of Blackwell's specialized chips in Arizona and AI supercomputers in Texas as part of what the company said will be more than half a trillion dollars in AI infrastructure investments over the next four years.
"The world's AI infrastructure engines will be produced in the United States for the first time," NVIDIA founder Yensen Huang said in a statement Wednesday. "Adding American manufacturing will help us better meet the incredible demand for AI chips and supercomputers, strengthen our supply chain, and increase our resilience."
Nvidia's announcement comes as the Trump administration stated that tariff exemptions for electronic devices, such as smartphones and laptops, are only temporary while officials develop a new approach to tariffs specifically for the semiconductor industry.
White House officials, including President Donald Trump, spent yesterday downplaying the significance of these tariff exemptions, which mitigate, but will not eliminate, tariffs on imports of popular consumer devices and their key components. Chipmaker Nvidia and SoftBank Corp, the telecom arm of SoftBank Group Corp, said Wednesday they have tested the world's first 5G/AI communications network.
The companies added that the network can run AI and 5G workloads simultaneously, a process known as an artificial intelligence radio access network (AI-RAN). Applications of the network include remote support for self-driving cars and robot control.
