Serious Incident: Armed Attack on Flamengo Players
Brazilian club Flamengo announced that some of its players were subjected to an armed attack upon their return to Rio de Janeiro on Thursday morning, following a 1-1 draw against Argentina's Central Córdoba in the Copa Libertadores.
Flamengo explained in a statement that the attack occurred as the players were returning home and "resulted in no injuries." Flamengo added that the car carrying Argentine goalkeeper Agustín Rossi "was armored and was hit by four bullets," noting that none of the players or passengers in the other cars were injured. According to the Argentine newspaper Ole, the attack was a robbery.
The Rio military police stated that they "conducted searches in the area and transported the players" to a police station. Flamengo, one of the favorites to win the Copa Libertadores, is in third place in Group C with 5 points, behind Ecuador's Liga de Quito and Central Córdoba, each with 8 points.
