Historic Concert "Literally Shakes the Earth".. the Seismological Observatory Explains
Virginia Tech University's LANE Stadium experienced an extraordinary night, as the famous Metallica concert literally shook the ground beneath the audience's feet.
The second time was when they actually played the song, with more than 60,000 fans jumping at the same time, as is the university's tradition. Virginia Tech's Seismological Observatory, located one mile from the stadium, recorded an increase in seismic activity on the evening of the concert.
Martin Chapman, director of the observatory, told Axios that the ground movement was similar to a very small natural earthquake, measuring approximately 1 on the Richter scale or less. Chapman explained that the noise generated by the crowd is not considered an earthquake in the scientific sense because it is not a "natural rupture in the Earth's crust."
Although it is not counted as an actual earthquake, the university has already launched T-shirts bearing the phrase "Blacksburg Earthquake, the Night the Earth Shook," along with an image of a seismometer. Social media users have dubbed the event the "Metallica Earthquake."
This is not the first time tremors have been detected at LANE Stadium during the playing of "Enter Sandman." This happened in 2011, 2015, and 2021, but it is the first time it has happened in Virginia due to a heavy metal band
