Bill Gates: Musk Threatens the Lives of the World's Poorest Children
After Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates announced plans to close the Gates Foundation by 2045, he launched a scathing attack on Elon Musk, accusing him of cutting funding for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
Gates also directly accused Musk of endangering the lives of millions of poor children, saying that Musk's support for these decisions contributes to "killing the world's poorest children" by reducing development aid that would otherwise improve their conditions.
Bill Gates pledged on Thursday to give away his entire personal fortune over the next two decades, noting that his charitable foundation will allocate approximately $200 billion to support the world's poorest people at a time when governments around the world are cutting international aid.
Bill Gates' remaining fortune is estimated at approximately $113 billion, according to Forbes magazine. Gates also criticized Elon Musk, the world's richest man, accusing him of causing the "murder of the world's poorest children" as a result of significant cuts to the US aid budget.
"Musk threatens the lives of the poor."
In an interview with the Financial Times, Gates said that Elon Musk's decisions had led to the disruption of essential humanitarian programs that provided food, vaccines, and medicine to the poor around the world.
He noted that the closure of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) dealt a "deadly blow" to millions of children and families in the world's poorest countries. He added, "The image of the richest man in the world killing the world's poorest children is not pretty."
Bill Gates accused his counterpart, Elon Musk, of acting out of "ignorance" after he supported the suspension of the US aid program (USAID) through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which Musk created to reduce what he considered "wasteful public spending."
The Financial Times reported that one of the hardest-hit by the decision was a hospital in the Gaza district of Mozambique, which works to prevent mothers from transmitting HIV to their babies.
Gates noted that Musk withheld funding from the hospital due to geographic confusion—he thought the "Gaza" referred to was in the Middle East—and sarcastically said, "I hope Musk goes and sees the children who have contracted AIDS as a result of this decision
Instead of closing hospitals, Elon Musk should ensure that children's lives are protected and healthcare is provided to them. Human life is more important than any commercial or political considerations.
