Iran to the Security Council: Trump's remarks are reckless and provocative

Iran told the UN Security Council in a letter on Monday that US President Donald Trump and other US officials had made "reckless and provocative" remarks, made "baseless accusations," and threatened to use force against Tehran.

"Iran strongly and categorically rejects any allegation of violating relevant Security Council resolutions on the arms embargo in Yemen, or engaging in any destabilizing activities in the region," Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations Amir Saeed Iravani wrote in the letter, seen by Reuters.

Trump declared on Monday that Iran "will be held accountable for every shot fired" by the Tehran-backed Houthi rebels, who have been attacking commercial vessels off the coast of Yemen for more than a year. The US president wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, "Every single Houthi fire, starting now, will be considered fire from Iranian weapons and Iranian officials. Iran will be held responsible and will suffer consequences that will be terrible."

Trump added that "hundreds of attacks by the Houthis and the evil mafia based in Yemen, who are hated by the Yemeni people, are launched from Iran and planned by Iran." He explained that Tehran gives the Houthis the most basic "instructions and directions" and provides them with "weapons, money, advanced military equipment, and even so-called 'intelligence.'" US strikes targeting the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, and other Houthi-controlled areas killed dozens over the weekend.

In retaliation, the rebels claimed responsibility for two separate attacks on the US aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman in the Red Sea on Sunday and Monday, using ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as drones. The Houthis have been attacking ships they consider to be linked to Israel since the outbreak of the war in Gaza on October 7, 2023, in what they say is solidarity with the Palestinians.
