Facebook Raids Brotherhood Pages

Facebook also said it removed 31 accounts, 25 pages and two Instagram accounts associated with the Muslim Brotherhood, which is an Islamist organization. These posters were from Turkey, Egypt and Morocco. They posted content that praised the governments of Turkey and Qatar and criticized Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). One post consisted of an unfounded claim that the Emirates plotted to overthrow the Tunisian government, for example, per the report.

The company indicated in its monthly report that it removed nearly 8,000 pages involved in disinformation campaigns during the month of October, confirming that it had dismantled seven separate networks of fake accounts and pages that were active in Iran, Afghanistan, Egypt, Turkey, Morocco, Myanmar, Georgia and Ukraine.

Facebook noted that many of those accounts and pages were involved in misleading political influence campaigns that used fake accounts to target audiences at home and abroad.

Facebook revealed that one of the aforementioned network of accounts was managed from Egypt, Turkey and Morocco by individuals associated with the “Muslim Brotherhood” group, which is banned in Egypt, adding that these pages targeted regional countries and included some content related to terrorism.

Turkey and Qatar are friendly with the Muslim Brotherhood, while Saudi Arabia, the UAE and their allies staunchly oppose the group.
