Billionaire and Prime Minister: Aziz Akhannouch Adds $100 Billion to His Fortune

Forbes' list of the world's richest people reveals that Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch maintains his position as the second richest man in Morocco, with a fortune estimated at $1.6 billion. He remains one of the most prominent figures combining political and economic influence.

Despite his rise in the business world since the 1990s, Akhannouch's significance transcends financial rankings, as he has served as Prime Minister since 2021. This is an exceptional career path that combines managing the executive branch with leading one of the largest economic groups in Morocco.

Aziz Akhannouch was born in 1961 in Tafraout, southern Morocco. He studied business administration at the University of Sherbrooke in Canada before embarking on his business career and founding a number of diverse companies.

Throughout his career, he held influential positions, most notably as President of the Souss-Massa-Draa Regional Council (2003–2007), a member of King Hassan II's advisory group, Minister of Agriculture and Maritime Fisheries (2007–2021), and President of the National Rally of Independents party since 2016. In 2021, he became Prime Minister of Morocco after his party's victory in the elections.

A Giant Economic Empire

Akhannouch leads the Akwa Group, one of the largest family-owned conglomerates in Morocco. He inherited the Akwa Group, an oil company founded by his father in 1932.

The group operates in the energy, gas, and chemical sectors through publicly traded companies such as Afriquia Gaz and Maghreb Oxygène. According to market estimates, it holds approximately 40% of the fuel market, 45% of the butane market, and 62% of the liquefied natural gas market.

This strong presence in strategic sectors explains his continued ranking among the wealthiest individuals.

Economic and Political Influence: A Debate That Never Ends

Aziz Akhannouch's wealth has increased by approximately $100 million since last August, when it stood at $1.5 billion according to Forbes' ranking.

Within Morocco, Akhannouch ranks second on the list of the wealthiest individuals, behind businessman Othman Benjelloun, whose fortune is estimated by Forbes at around $1.9 billion. The Moroccan Prime Minister, however, ranks 2337th on the list of the world's richest people.

Akhannouch is considered one of the most influential figures in Morocco, with his network extending to numerous official and professional institutions, including the Moroccan Bank for Foreign Trade, Bank Al-Maghrib (the central bank), and the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM).
